Lie the homograph…..

4 Aug

I do not think it is by mere chance that moral degeneration overshadows my thoughts this morning. I do not think that it is mere coincidence that this was the day Anne Frank and her family’s hiding place were betrayed to the Gestapo. It is also not coincidence that the word “lie” is a homograph. Yet the different meanings of “lie” are also very closely connected.

The “I deny” and “I am innocent” blanket in South African politics is so tattered that there may never be any chance for amendment. Once again the arms deal makes the news and the only thought that crosses this South African citizen’s mind is “Yeah right”. Is this the first shovel full of dirt dug for the moral grave? When we as citizens immediately brush aside statements as untrue, before even considering the facts?

In the normal, everyday walk of life, we encounter countless examples of lies. We are inundated with commercials promising heaven and earth on the one side, and swept away in a stream of political statements on the other. Salesmen are reciting sales-pitches in the one corner of the shop, whilst a newspaper-headline is promulgating the latest denials from the magazine stands.

Has the world out there so gone to pot, that we can not at face value believe what we are told anymore? George Orwell wrote the following:

“Political language… is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”

But where does campaigning-stories end, and outright lying to the nation start? It is very sad when a free-thinking and accommodating citizen looses faith in, and nurtures an animosity towards, all factions in the political arena.

Is betrayal any different from lies?

Anne Frank and her family feared discovery, by the Gestapo, daily whilst they were in hiding. They were eventually betrayed by an informant, thought to have been one of the very people that helped them initially. In the current South African situation the non-delivery on promises, is surely betrayal of voter-confidence, hence proof of outright lies. It is ironic, that in view of Anne’s situation, she still managed to write the following:

“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart”

Was this the naïve writing of a 14 year old, or a lesson to be learnt in tenacity?

It is without question that the core of lying, the decease, lies within the individual. This brings us back to our homograph. That which lie within the characters of the liars, which give birth to the lie that frequently get voiced. The rotten core of lies, lies within the character, or lack thereof, of the speaker. The moral degeneration of a nation has its roots in the liars, who can lie without any thought to repercussion. It was also Anne Frank that wrote:

“The final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”

Where does this leave me, and you? I wish I had a clever answer. I don’t. What I do however know is the grave is getting deeper, and that a so-called “democracy” built on lies and denials generates the possibility do be buried in dirt. The question is probably where blind following ends, and enlightened decisions starts?

Oscar Wilde sê dit die beste: “Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.”

Ons weet altwee hoe Robin Williams altoos politici beskrywe. Ek dink nie daar is ‘n onderskeid moontlik nie. Vir my is die beste van “lie” maar: “Lie on your back and look at the star” 😉

    Goeie gedagtes hier, dmi.
